A Closer Look at How Live Betting Works
What are the most common markets and how can you gain an edge over the sportsbooks?

Live betting (also called in-play betting) is when you place bets on a game after it has already started. Instead of deciding everything before kickoff, you react to what is happening in real time.
Most major sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook offer live betting as a core feature. You will usually see a “Live” or “In-Game” tab where odds change constantly during the match.
Live betting is full of action and unpredictability, so let’s see how it works in practice.
How Does Live Betting Work?
When you place a live bet, you are working with odds that are always moving. Every goal, foul, penalty or shift in momentum can change the price within seconds.
But there is something important happening in the background: you are always slightly behind the action.
There is a built-in delay between what happens on the field and what you see in the app. This delay is not random, it is there to protect the sportsbook. For example, someone watching the game inside the stadium sees events a few seconds earlier than someone watching a stream. Without a delay, that person could place bets with an unfair advantage.
Because of this, sportsbooks pause markets at key moments. When a goal is scored or a big chance happens, betting is temporarily suspended. When the market reopens, the odds have already adjusted.
This means you are never betting on “fresh” information. The price already reflects what just happened.
Why Are Live Odds Constantly Changing?
Live betting odds are controlled by a mix of algorithms and human traders. These systems are designed to react quickly and keep the sportsbook in a safe position.
Prices do not just reflect the current score. They reflect what is likely to happen next. That is why odds can move even when nothing obvious has happened. Small shifts in possession or time remaining can still affect the numbers.
For example, we have a game between the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks taking place in the Ball Arena. The home team are firm favorites and have starting odds of -300 to win the game. The first half ends and the Mavs have built a 6-point lead. The odds for the Nuggets to win have shifted already to -180.
The more time is passing and the Mavs are keeping their advantage, the more the odds are changing. So even though nothing happens, with every minute of the game passing by, the chances of the Nuggets to win are actually going down.
If the Nuggets make a quick comeback and score 9 points in a row, then odds immediately shift. Not just the mainline market, but Under/Over points, Winning margin etc.
What Are the Most Common Markets?
Some of the most common live betting markets include:
- Match result (12) updated during the game
- Over/under on points, fouls etc.
- Player-performance bets
- Handicap lines
- Half-time bets
- Quarter bets
For major competitions like the NBA, Euroleague and FIBA Champions League, you can find some less common markets as well. A few examples include:
- Race to X Points
- 1X2 in the next X minutes
- Next Scoring Play – either a 2-pointer, a 3-pointer or a free throw
Don’t be surprised if the market you want is not available, especially in the early minutes or the first half of the game. Sometimes a market is only paused and will return in a few moments.
In other cases the market may not come back at all. For example, if the home team is already leading 18+ points with 4 minutes to go, the standard mainline market may no longer be offered because the outcome is seen as too predictable.
In these situations, sportsbooks shift the focus to other markets. Instead of the match result, you will usually see options like Over/Under points or Player props updated as the main betting choices.
Gaining an Edge in Live Betting
Finding value in live betting is a great example of how experienced players are trying to gain an edge over the sportsbook. This happens when a player believes the odds offered by the sportsbook are higher than they should be. For example, if a strong team falls behind with a lot of points and their odds increase, some people may see this as a “value” opportunity to back them, assuming the price movement is too extreme.
Another approach is momentum betting, where decisions are based on how the game looks in real time. If one team is dominating possession or creating more chances, you may try to follow that momentum and bet on them to build a strong advantage or win the game.
There is also live hedging, where a second bet is placed during the match to manage risk or balance an earlier position. For example, you place a bet on Under 240.5 points in the first minutes of the game. If the game is slow during the first half, you can place a bet on Over 240.5 goals. If the odds are in your favor, you can profit no matter the outcome.
However, all of these strategies still rely on chance. Even when the idea makes sense, the outcome depends on events in the match that cannot be controlled or predicted with certainty. A team may look like it is building momentum, but if they never make a good lead, the bet can still lose at the end.
Live Betting Promotions and Free Bets
Sportsbooks regularly offer promotions to both new and existing users. The main reason is simple: they want users to return to the app and place bets regularly. These offers are designed to increase engagement, which in turn supports long-term profitability for the sportsbook.
Live betting promotions are not fundamentally different from pre-match offers. You may see deals such as “Bet X live, get Y as a free bet for a pre-match game” or “Bet X pre-match, get Y to use in a live market.” In some cases, there are also bet boosts or enhanced odds available during live events.
At first glance, these promotions can look like an opportunity to generate a profit. However, even the best team or star player can have a bad day.
Instead of relying on the outcome of the bet itself, you can manage both sides of the bet. This is done by placing an opposing bet on a betting exchange or another sportsbook, so that all outcomes are covered. When done correctly, you can turn a promotion into a more predictable result. This method is known as matched betting.
How To Complete a Free Bet Like a Ninja?
Matched betting is significantly easier when done on pre-match markets. When you have 2+ hours before kickoff, odds are more stable, and both sides of a bet can be placed without major price changes.
In live betting, the situation becomes more complex. Odds move constantly, markets may close temporarily, and prices can shift between placing one bet and the other.
Let’s say that Desert Diamond is giving you a $10 free bet if you place a $10 qualifying bet on a live event.
- Open your Desert Diamond account, your betting exchange account (like ProphetX), and the calculator in your Ninjabet account. You can also open another sportsbook account like FanDuel or DraftKings in case there is not enough liquidity on the exchange.
- Choose a suitable match. It’s best to focus on popular events from major basketball, football, soccer or tennis competitions.
- Wait for the right moment when odds are more stable.
- In basketball and football, half-time is the safest option. If you are ready in advance, you can use breaks after the first and third quarters as well.
- In soccer, this is usually half-time as well. You have around 15 minutes of stable markets. Short cooling breaks in the middle of each half-time that we see in some competitions can also work.
- In tennis, it’s best to wait for the end of a set, as the game moves quickly and stable odds are harder to find during play.
- Enter the odds into the calculator and check if the expected qualifying loss is acceptable. Always check liquidity. If it is low, consider placing the opposing bet with a sportsbook.
- Once everything looks correct, place both bets.
Using the Free Bet
After the qualifying bet settles, the free bet becomes available.
Let’s say that, in this example, the qualifying bet resulted in a $1,50 loss. The free bet can now be used on another event, including pre-match markets where odds are more stable.
We take that option and use the Dutcher to find the best market. For example, we see that the profitable opportunity is for the next game between the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets. We back the Warriors using the free bet at Desert Diamond and back the Rockets on ProphetX. No matter how the game goes, we end up on a $7 profit regardless of the outcome.
In this case, the calculation looks like this:
$7,00 bonus bet profit − $1,50 qualifying loss = $5,50 final profit.
And that is how a live betting promotion can be completed using a structured matched betting approach.
ℹ️ Matched betting is not gambling, but it still requires careful execution. Always read the terms of each promotion.
